Syllables

    English words are made up of syllables. Syllables are distinct sounds within a word. All syllables have a vowel sound in them, and usually have a consonant between it and the next syllable. A word may have one, two, three, four, or more syllables.

Syllable Stress

     In a word with two or more syllables, one syllable is stressed (meaning they have a stronger and longer sound) and the other syllables are unstressed or weak (meaning they are not said or pronounced as strong or as long as stressed syllables). Listen to the below and note the stressed syllables. The stressed syllable is in bold.

Recognizing Stress

     Sometimes it is difficult to determine or hear where the stress is on some words. There are three things to keep in mind that may help you recognize which syllable is stressed.

1. the pitch (see below) of the syllable is higher than in other syllables in the word.

2. the vowel sound in the syllable is said or pronounced longer than other syllables in the word.

3. the syllable is pronounced as a full vowel (not reduced as in the Schwa sound- see section on vowels)

Sílabas

Las palabras inglesas se componen de sílabas. Las sílabas son sonidos distintos dentro de una palabra. Todas las sílabas tener un sonido vocal en ellos, y por lo general tienen una consonante entre éste y el siguiente sílaba. Una palabra puede tener uno, dos, tres, cuatro, o más sílabas.

Acento de Silaba

    En una palabra con dos o más sílabas, una sílaba se acentúa (lo que significa que tienen un sonido más fuerte y más) y los demás son sílabas átonas o débil (lo que significa que no se dice o pronuncian tan fuerte o tan largo como sílabas tónicas). Escucha la continuación y tomar nota de las sílabas tónicas. La sílaba tónica está en negrita.

Reconocimiento del Acento
 
    A veces es difícil determinar o escuchar en el que el estrés es en algunas palabras. Hay tres cosas a tener en cuenta que pueden ayudarle a reconocer que sílaba se tensiona.

1. el terreno de juego (ver más abajo) de la sílaba es mayor que en otras sílabas de la palabra.

2. el sonido vocal en la sílaba se dice o se pronuncia más tiempo que otras sílabas de la palabra.

3. la sílaba se pronuncia como una vocal completa (no reducida como en el del sonido Schwa véase la sección sobre las vocales)
